Acupuncture Holistic Center of New Jersey

Insurance & coverage

We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to verify your acupuncture benefits before your first visit.

Every insurance plan is different. Even plans from the same company—such as BCBS—can vary depending on what your employer has negotiated. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine your exact coverage without information from your insurance company.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Some plans include acupuncture benefits, but many do not. Even if you have coverage, there may be limitations such as:

  • Coverage restricted to specific conditions (often pain-related only)
  • Limits on the number of visits per year
  • Coverage limited to certain body areas (e.g., low back, neck, migraines, osteoarthritis)
  • Deductibles that must be met before benefits begin

For example, certain Aetna plans only cover acupuncture for migraines, headaches, neck pain, low back pain, or hip/knee osteoarthritis. Fertility, shoulder pain, and many other conditions are often not covered.

We encourage you to confirm:

  • Whether you have in-network (IN) or out-of-network (OON) coverage
  • What your deductible is
  • How many visits are allowed per year
  • What conditions qualify for reimbursement

You are always welcome to call our office with questions. We are happy to help, but please understand that coverage details must be confirmed with your insurer.

How we work with insurance

AHCNJ is out-of-network (OON) for all insurance plans.

If you have out-of-network acupuncture coverage, we will submit claims on your behalf for:

  • Horizon BCBS and most BCBS plans(Note: OMNIA plans do not cover acupuncture)
  • Aetna
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Medicare Advantage plans

For all other insurance providers, we will provide a superbill for you to submit directly.

Payment is due at the time of service. If your claim is approved, we will adjust your account or reimburse you after we receive your Explanation of Benefits (EOB).

Flexible spending and HSA

If your insurance does not cover acupuncture, treatments typically qualify as an eligible expense under:

  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
  • Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

You may use your FSA or HSA card, or we can provide documentation for reimbursement.

Medicare information

Medicare is extremely restrictive regarding acupuncture coverage.

Traditional Medicare only covers a limited number of treatments for chronic low back pain, and claims must be submitted through a credentialed medical doctor’s office. Medicare does not credential licensed acupuncturists directly, which means we are unable to submit claims to Medicare unless services are provided within a qualifying medical office.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan with acupuncture benefits, we may be able to submit claims depending on your coverage.

If you have questions about your plan, please contact our office. We’re happy to guide you through the process and help you understand your options.
